Conservation Overview

The Sierra Club is involved in many conservation issues throughout San Luis Obispo County. Most issues deal with changes in land use policies, maintaining coastal access, preserving agricultural and open space, transportation and building sustainable communities.

2001 CONSERVATION PRIORITIES ARE:

  • North Coast Area Plan and the Hearst Ranch Development - Yes the update process is about to begin again. Hearst Corporation is still knocking at our doors to develop a 5 star resort on San Simeon Point, across from Hearst Castle. With the recent shift on the Board of Supervisors, it is more important than ever that we show a strong position for protecting the Central Coastline. For more information or to get involved call Jesse (805)927-3096.
  • San Luis Obispo Airport Annexation - The Sierra Club is very concerned about the Airport Annexation Area. We are concerned on how it will be planned, who will pay for new services provided by the city, what areas will be preserved and how it will integrate into the Green belt area.
  • Santa Margarita Ranch Development - The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and Rob Rossi are in negotiations to preserve this ranch. Unfortunately, ripping of the ground has been started in preperation for 3,000 acres of vineyards. We are continuing to watch this development to see if we can preserve the ranch for future generations.
  • Morros (Nine Sisters) Preservation and Planning - The Sierra Club has been involved with Morros for more than 20 years. Currently the County's Morros Advisory Committee (MAC) is starting to write the first draft of the overall Master Plan for the Morros. It is anticipated that the first draft will be available in late 2000. For more information call Jan Dileo at County Parks (805)781-5930.
  • Dunes Preservation

Conservation Committee

The Sierra Club Conservation Committee meets as required to discuss the many issues concerning the club. Once a consensus is reached a position paper or letter is sometimes prepared to voice the Sierra Club's position on a given issue. If necessary public testimony will be given as well.

The Conservation Committee is very active and is always looking for new members to broaden our expertise or those who wish to learn more about land use planning , coastal access, and other conservation issues in general. For more information on the Sierra Club Conservation Committee contact Tarren at (461-3873).
